The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge across the Missouri River

from Omaha, Nebraska to Council Bluffs, Iowa.

An early morning walk along the river in Omaha reveals a swollen, turbulent Missouri which has been overrunning its floodplains this summer with disasterous effects to farmlands and communities.

A is for Abandoned

Found this large sandcastle on Mustang Island beach in Texas on the morning after the July 4th festivities. It was large enough for several small children to play in and probably provided great fun during the whole weekend, but now it seemed so sad and deserted.

Sunrise on the Bay

A shrimp trawler working the edge of Corpus Christi Bay draws a crowd of gulls and pelicans looking for breakfast.  Buying the morning catch off the boats when they come in, is one of our regular delights while visiting here on the Texas coast.

Life at the Beach

Black skimmers working the shore of Mustang Island on the Texas coast.
As noted in Wikipedia, "Skimmers have a light graceful flight, with steady beats of their long wings. They feed usually in large flocks, flying low over the water surface with the lower mandible skimming the water (in order of importance) for small fish, insects, crustaceans and molluscs^[2] caught by touch by day or especially at night. They spend much time loafing gregariously on sandbars in the rivers, coasts and lagoons they frequent."
