Cape Disappointment

A blustery summer morning last week while visiting Cape Disappointment at the SW corner of Washington state. This view is looking southward across the mouth of the Columbia River toward Oregon. The entrance to the Columbia has long been called the Graveyard of the Pacific. Many vessels have been lost there due to treacherous combinations of changing weather, river bottom, tide, current and sea conditions.
The name comes from an English Captain John Meares who in 1788 missed the passage over the river and named the nearby headland Cape Disappointment for his failure in finding the river.

An interesting and most successful choice to render the scene in B&W.
